With the second half of The Walking Dead’s tenth second on the horizon, showrunner Angela Kang recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly and teased us with some interesting details of what’s to come, even talking up the finale!

She started by talking about that midseason finale cliffhanger, which saw our heroes (including Daryl, Carol and Aaron) led into a cave and trapped by Alpha. What’s more, the cave wasn’t empty, but filled with literally hundreds of Walkers. Kang has confirmed that the midseason premiere will continue right where it left off, which is good because we couldn’t possibly wait any longer.

“We’re going to pick up in the cave with our people and to see what they do, trying to navigate their way out of this incredible danger,” Kang said. “This is really screwed up situation. Our people are really clever and strong, but it’s a pretty precarious situation that they’re in. So we’ll tell that story. I think it’s a really fun little action adventure, some horror, and we’ll see if they all make it out.”

Aside from the cliffhanger in the cave, possibly the most exciting thing going on is the growing partnership between Negan and Alpha. It looks like the show might be playing things out a bit differently than in the comics, with the two villains working together.

"Negan is in with Alpha and we see the ways that he does what Negan does so well, which is try to read people, try to see how he can work them. It’s fun to see what these two do with their roles, because they’re both very smart, formidable leaders and now they have to wrangle each other and kind of negotiate what the roles are and how they feel about each other, and how they may cause trouble together."

How long the alliance between Negan and Alpha will remain civil remains to be seen. They both have extremely strong personalities. But apparently it’s a completely different story offscreen with actors Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Morton. “Oh, it was so much fun,” Kang said. “Samantha is amazing and Jeffrey’s amazing and just the idea of writing scenes for these two really formidable actors, who play these formidable characters in the show, that really opens up a lot of imaginative avenues for everybody.”

Kang didn’t hold back on talking about the season 10 finale, either. She revealed that it’s currently in post-production, and has advised fans to pay extra close attention to what goes on in the new episodes because “massive things of importance happen in every episode moving forward for now.”

And if there’s one thing that The Walking Dead has loved doing over the years, for better or for worse, it’s leaving us on some nail-biting cliffhangers. Now, Kang has confirmed that the season 10 finale will indeed follow suit:

"I’ll just say that there’s some big stuff and there is a cliffhanger, without getting into what exactly that is. But I think hopefully it will be exciting."

It won’t be the first time the AMC drama has left us hanging, and it probably won’t be the last. The Walking Dead is a show that loves to keep fans guessing; the scene that immediately comes to mind is the introduction of Negan back in the season 6 finale, which still stands as one of the most divisive moments of recent television history!

As for what the new cliffhanger will entail, well, the jury is still out. I’m still holding out hope that we get to see the Commonwealth this season, which was my favorite comic storyline.
