Doctor Who: Series 13 confirmed, but won’t begin filming until autumn 2020
By James Aggas
It’s been confirmed that Doctor Who fans can look forward to another series of their favorite show. But they may have to wait a while…
If you’re worried about whether we’ll be getting another series of Doctor Who, don’t be. Series 13 of the New Series has been confirmed by producer Tracie Simpson at fan convention Gallifrey One. However, it won’t begin shooting until autumn later this year. Possibly in September, but that has yet to be confirmed.
Naturally, this means that we won’t be seeing Series 13 until next year. This isn’t something many of us will be surprised about. However, considering how long the gap can be between the start of production for a series and its eventual broadcast, it may mean that we’ll have to wait over a year for it, maybe even over eighteen months. After all, keep in mind that Series 12 started shooting back in January 2019, and it was almost a full year before we eventually saw the first episode broadcast.
So if Series 13 is as ambitious as Series 12 – with shooting taking place all over the world – we might not be seeing it until autumn next year, possibly summer at best. So once again, Doctor Who fans can expect a very long wait for the next set of episodes.
Jodie Whittaker has confirmed that she’ll be returning to Series 13.

Upcoming special
However, it has to be said that it’s not all bad news. As well as Series 13, a special episode has also been confirmed. It likely won’t be broadcast until New Year’s Day next year, or perhaps even Christmas Day. Either way, we’ll be getting a little something to fill that long upcoming wait for brand new episodes.
On top of that, both Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall have confirmed that they’ll be returning to Doctor Who for the next series. During a visit to Doctor Who‘s Cardiff set, Chibnall had this to say regarding rumors that he was leaving:
"It’s categorically untrue. We’re already planning the next series after this series."
Well, that seems to confirm that things won’t be changing anytime soon. Fans will have a long wait for Series 13, but at least we have one special episode to look forward to before then – not to mention Series 12’s huge finale, The Timeless Children, which will be broadcast this Sunday. That looks set to be an extremely exciting resolution to the series.
How do you feel about having to wait a long time for the next series of Doctor Who? Are you glad that both Whittaker and Chibnall are staying on, or would you prefer to see change on the show? Let us know in the comments below.
