Batwoman Episode 113: “Drink Me”

The characters of Batwoman are still reeling from the death of Earth-Prime Beth, but this week we take a little break from the sadness to deal with vampires. Yes, vampires. One named Nocturna, to be exact.

Kate wastes no time getting into her Batwoman attire and onto the battlefield against Nocturna. Unfortunately, before she realizes it, she’s bitten by the sexy vampire and ends up paralyzed. The CW is known for its vampire shows, and it’s nice to see them playing with the lore.

I’ll be the first to say I’ve never really understood the Sophie/Kate relationship. It’s not one I care much for, but this week’s episode changed that. Up until now, we’ve seen Sophie keep her feelings heavily guarded around Kate. She wasn’t comfortable being open about her sexuality, but now that she’s single again, I think Sophie is starting to understand herself in a different light. She assumed that Kate was Batwoman and tried to prove it, but was temporarily thwarted when Kate fooled her into thinking she had it all wrong. But I think deep down, Sophie knows that Kate is Batwoman, which is why she’s so eager to help Batwoman with everything, and why the two lock lips later in the episode.

Sophie jeopardizes her job by helping Batwoman, whom Sophie’s boss Jacob Kane hates with a passion. If only he knew that it was his daughter under that mask.

In any case, Jacob learns that Sophie has been helping Batwoman behind his back. This all comes to light because Kate throws a party to lure Nocturna out (this is after Sophie saves her from the vampire in the first place). Sophie shows up to investigate but is later caught on security footage, footage that Jacob sees and loses his mind over. He’s not happy with her, at all, and suspends her. Hey, at least this sudden shift in her life led her to her making out with Batwoman. Maybe she’ll finally get the hint that it is Kate.

But let’s talk about my favorite part of this week’s episode: After Alice learns that Kate was willing to let her die and save Beth, things aren’t so great between the sisters. However, Alice surprises this week when she comes to Kate and Mary’s rescue.

Nocturna captures Alice, and then Alice directs her to Mary. At the time, we assume Alice is being Alice but there is something bigger at play here/ It all leads to Gotham Cathedral, where Nocturna is holding Mary captive.

After an epic, epic fight between Batwoman and Nocturna, Alice does something extremely unexpected: she saves Mary’s life. Did she do it out of the kindness of her heart? Nah, she just wanted to make sure Kate understood how wrong she was to pick Beth and not her.

Come on, Alice. You did something pretty epic. Did you have to go and spoil it? It looks like Kate isn’t fooled either.

And speaking of sisters, it seems like Mary might have figured out that Kate is Batwoman. Uh oh, Kate might have just pissed off not one, but two sisters.
