All about the excellent World of Ice and Fire app

A Song of Ice and Fire fans have no lack of resources to get filled in on the finer points of their favorite epic. Westeros.org hosts all kinds of interesting discussions, A Wiki of Ice and Fire contains a wealth of information, and The World of Ice and Fire book brings Westerosi trivia to the top of your coffee table.

Just lately, Spanish-language fansite Los Siete Reinos highlighted another great resource that I admit I’ve never taken advantage of: the World of Ice and Fire app developed by Smashing Ideas and published by Random House. This app launched way back in 2012 for Apple devices, but is now available for pretty much any phone or tablet you can get your hands on.

The app is very highly rated on the App Store: 4.5 stars out of five based on almost 500 ratings. Opening it up, it’s easy to see why. The information on hand here is vast, with a huge database of people, places, groups, religious, creatures and houses from George R.R. Martin’s books. The text comes mostly direct from Elio García and Linda Antonsson, who worked with Martin on writing The World of Ice and Fire, while the artwork is from various A Song of Ice and Fire games made by Fantasy Flight Games. That means a lot of this artwork is stuff fans haven’t seen before — or at least, I haven’t seen a lot of it before — and it’s pretty striking.

While the app is free, some of the features do cost extra to unlock. One of the coolest features is the official maps, on which you can trace the journeys of various characters. There are even chapters from The Winds of Winter available, not to mention a hopelessly exhaustive database of minutia. Obviously there are character profiles of big players like Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister, but how about Addam Osgrey, who supported Daemon Blackfyre in his rebellion? Of course you’ll find entries on places like Harrenhal and King’s Landing, but what about info on Paps, an island off the coast of the Vale run by Hous Elesham? It’s a fan’s dream.

Also, the World of Ice and Fire app got a serious facelift just last year, so even if you’ve used it before, now might be a good time to return to it.
