Outlander: Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin talk Brianna and Roger

The Droughtlander is over, but every time we have to wait a week between new episodes, we’re right back in the thick of things, combing over every interview, promo, or sneak peek for clues of this terrific story is going.

Last month at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, the cast of Outlander sat down with Entertainment Tonight to give fans a bit of a tease about what’s to come. Of course, at the time, season 5 had not yet premiered, but there’s still plenty to look forward to because things are just getting started!

One of the things Outlander fans were super excited about was Roger and Brianna’s wedding. It was the season 5 opener, and it was perfect in every sense of the word.

Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin have some funny memories of filming the wedding scene. Skelton, for her part, barely recalls the whole experience. And with the number of takes she had to do, we can’t say we blame her. “Honestly, it’s all kind of blurred together. We did so many takes of that wedding I think we got married about 50 times…We did many takes of it, but we didn’t split it up at all. So every time we did it, we ran it from the top to the bottom and it was quite a long wedding.”

Same goes for Rankin. “It was a very, very long ,” he remembered. “We got married so many times just to make sure that we were absolutely married. We got married about 41 times. We started to forget our vows to each other. We were just staring blankly at each other in the takes.”

But despite how long it went on, the cast had a wonderful time putting it together. “But it was fun!” Skelton said. “It’s actually a rare day that we get all the cast together in one scene. As you know, there’s so many characters in the show that when you’re all together, it’s really fun. It was kind of like a big party.”

Of course, the wedding episode also included a memorable love montage featuring more than one couple.  Skelton recalls it being a very sweet experience. “The montage is sweet,” she said. “Obviously, you have such different relationships in the show and it’s nice that we have three completely different ages and relationships and circumstances and outcomes of those scenes.

While I love Jamie and Claire’s scenes of passion, it was nice to see how the other couples are doing — Outlander spreads the love around.

I know we’re all wondering: is it awkward to do scenes like this in front of an entire crew? “I feel like we’re used to it,” Skelton said. “You just get used to it. There’s just always so many people on set as well, you know? There’s actually 30 people in the room.

30 people!? My oh my.

Personally (and Rankin agrees), I loved seeing John Grey in the episode. It was very sweet to see him basically being part of the family. “And then Lord John at the end! How he just sat there with the drunken guy! That was really funny. I liked that. I thought it was a really nice tone the way they put all of that together, which made for, actually, a really nice kind of heartwarming episode.”

The next episode of Outlander, “Free Will,” airs this Sunday on Starz! We hope you enjoyed the advance pictures strew throughout the post!
