CD Projekt will start work on a new Witcher game this year

Even months after it debuted on Netflix, The Witcher — starring Henry Cavill as lead character Geralt of Rivia — is still in high demand around the world, so taken are people with the show’s vision of a medieval-esque world beset by monsters and warring nations.
Or maybe they’re just fans of The Witcher 3, the phenomenally successful video game from Polish developer CD Projekt. While the Netflix show is more or less an adaptation of author Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels, it definitely takes some cues from the game, which is responsible for exposing the world of the world of the Witcher to a much wider audience when it came out in 2015.
It’s been a minute since we got word of a new game in the series, but with the success of The Witcher 3, everyone knew had to be coming sooner or later. Speaking to journalists recently, CD Projekt studio president Adam Kiciński firmed things up, saying that the developer intends to start work on a new Witcher game “immediately” after their current project, Cyberpunk 2077, hits store shelves this September.
That probably means we won’t actually see a new Witcher game for a while, but at least we know it’s coming. Kiciński went on to say that while the game will be “embedded” in the Witcher universe, it will not be called The Witcher 4. That makes us wonder if maybe we won’t be playing as Geralt in this one. Maybe it’s time for Yennefer or Ciri to take on the leading role, or it could be about something else entirely. Like any good fantasy series, The Witcher comes with a lot of lore to explore.
Kiciński also emphasized that its relationship with Andrzej Sapkowski had stabilized. Sapkowski famously threatened legal action against CD Projekt when the video games proved far more popular than he ever thought they would be, and he wanted to renegotiate his rights deal. That issue was eventually resolved, but don’t expect Sapkowski to be involved with the creation of whatever new game may go into development; he’s usually quite hands off when it comes to adaptations of his work.
In any case, The Witcher: The Next One will probably appear on next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Until that happens, we can just binge the Netflix series over and over — a new season of that should be out next year.
