The Mandalorian: Moff Gideon goes “all in” with the Darksaber

Disney recently wrapped filming on the second season of The Mandalorian, and according to star Giancarlo Esposito, fans have plenty to look forward to. The actor, who plays villain Moff Gideon, teased the new season during an interview with ComingSoon.net, starting by discussing what his character plans to do with the Darksaber.

The weapon, which was revealed during the final moments of The Mandalorian season 1, is very important to Star Wars lore. Until now, we’re only seen it onscreen in the animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels. Not only is the Darksaber connected to Mandalorian culture, but it’s effective even against Lightsabers — making it a formidable weapon, particularly in the hands of a dangerous guy like Moff Gideon. Is Esposito ready to use it?

"I am. I really am. I want to say I’ve destroyed quite a few of them and the prop guys go, “Wow, you go all in.”"

Destroying several Darksabers is an impressive accomplishment to add to one’s resume, and knowing Esposito, he was intimidating as all get out while doing it. Mando and Baby Yoda could be in serious trouble this upcoming season, especially if they don’t find stronger allies, or a way to master Baby Yoda’s Force powers.

In regard to the second season, Esposito teased a “great” installment that will bring together aspects of the Star Wars universe fans may not have thought about or connected to The Mandalorian previously. “This season is going to be really great,” he said. “This is the ultimate space western that’s so connected to things that we don’t know and don’t see. Originally George Lucas had a mentor and friend in Joseph Campbell. Joseph Campbell was all about the power of myth and the journey of the hero. Isn’t every one of our journeys the journey of the hero? We have our own hurdles to jump over and our own visions on our head that we want to hit.”

We’re not sure “hero” is the word we’d use to describe Esposito’s character, but … everyone’s the hero in their own eyes, right? We’ll see where Moff Gideon’s journey takes him when the second season of The Mandalorian arrives this October.
