The Flash Episode 615: “The Exorcism of Nash Wells”
Alright, Arrowverse fans, I’ll need you to explain The Flash to me. After the Crisis, it was doing just fine, but as soon as Barry started acting like, well, Barry again, things got messy. The one issue I have with his character is that he doesn’t understand he is a part of a team. While he is the leader, he needs to learn to work with his colleagues from time to time.
It’s so incredibly frustrating when he just interferes after someone has assured him they will take care of a situation, which brings us to this week’s episode and the metahuman of the week, Sunshine. Our first encounter with her comes after the evil versions of Iris and Kamila attempt to steal something called the Prism Refractor for Eva.
Unfortunately for them, Sunshine shows up to steal the very same device, so evil Iris calls the Flash to try and stop Sunshine from doing so. Back at S.T.A.R. Labs, Caitlin/Frost insists on taking the call since Barry needs to conserve his energy.
But does Barry listen? NOPE. Despite Caitlin/Frost taking charge, Barry shows up and ruins everything. Come on Barry, can’t you just be a team player for once?
Luckily, Barry comes to his senses eventually and helps Joe capture Sunshine, whose powers are heightened with, well, sunlight. They trick her into coming into Barry’s CSI lab, and as they close the shutters, it makes Sunshine just a regular ‘ol thief, and thus much easier to take down.
However, this isn’t really the focus of this week’s The Flash. Cisco spends most of it trying to exorcise — yes, exorcise — Eobard Thawne out of Wells’ body. The only way to pull this off without killing Wells is by having Cecile there to read his mind in case things get really bad.
I love how the Arrowverse finds ways to keep Cecile an integral part of the storyline. And in this case, her superpowers are perfect to help Cisco out with the exorcism. Inside of Wells’ mind, we learn that Thawne is torturing her in different ways, but specifically with his daughter, Maya, whom he lost during a mission the year before.
This gives us gripping insights into Wells’ psyche, which is packed with guilt over Maya, and Thawne is taking full advantage of it. The only way to tackle this and save Wells’ life is by entering his mind. Thankfully, Team Flash has a device that allows them to do just that (remember the Thinker days?).
Cisco pushes Wells to face the memory of losing Maya, and as Wells absolves himself of the guilt, Thawne is exorcised from his body. Ugh, Thawne is the worst. But there is one thing that he did that may help Team Flash create their own Speed Force and get Barry’s speed back full-time. Nora learned from Thawne how to create a Speed Force, and she kept a very thorough journal documenting it. Barry realizes this may be the key to solving their dilemma!
And here I thought Nora’s time on The Flash was utterly useless.
