Ten amazing graphic novels that deserve TV adaptations

Saga

Set in a rich universe filled with intrigue, Saga might make the perfect TV show. It could be a refreshing take on the space opera genre that’s been dominated by Star Wars for decades.

Unlike some of the authors represented on this list, Brian K. Vaughan has had some of his work adapted for the small screen. Hulu had a hit interpreting his Marvel comic series Runaways, and FX is hard at work adapting his series Y: The Last Man.

But as big a fan as I am of The Last Man, I would very much like to see Saga made into a TV show. Saga is a sweeping story illustrated by Fiona Staples. When you read this series, you’ll probably notice several cues taken from Star Wars, but Saga is much more than an homage. It follows two lovers from different worlds, Alana and Marko, as they struggle for survival in the midst of a galactic war, all while trying to protect their newborn child Hazel. I find it beautiful how Alana will stop at nothing to protect her family.

And Vaughan himself isn’t opposed to the idea of bringing Saga to television. “You know, I still probably think not yet,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017. “But I wouldn’t have imagined what was possible with Runaways now being possible 15 years ago … so, maybe in 15 years we will have caught up.”

"I remain not completely opposed to it. But for me, it’s so not the goal. I would rather just keep my head down and keep making a great comic book, then get out there and chase a great adaptation."

If we ever see a network option Saga for a TV adaptation, it’s time to get excited.
