4. Vikings
If you want a dash more history from your TV, then Vikings might be just the ticket. Based on the period of history when Vikings first discovered England and began raiding its shores, the show provides a good substitute if you’ve been missing Westeros.
The main story of Vikings follows Ragnar Lothbrok and his family as they play games of power, politics, and war not dissimilar from those on Game of Thrones. Alas, there are no dragons to be found here, but the show does lean pretty heavily into Norse mythology, using it as a basis to portray real-world Viking rituals, to provide glimpses into the afterlife, and everything in between. The great characters, epic battles, and plot twists make this an easy show to lose track of time with.
One of the other nice things about Vikings is that, since it’s made by History, there are plenty of real historical facts that you can look up if you’re enjoying the show. Most of Ragnar’s family were real people, and some of the show’s key events are based on their exploits (or tragedies).
The first five seasons of Vikings can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Hulu.
