Earlier this month, we learned that Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Tales, the novels on which Netflix’s The Last Kingdom is based, would come to an end with the thirteenth novel in the series, ominously titled War Lord. That book drops in the United Kingdom on October 15. Now, we have a look at the UK cover for the book on its Amazon UK listing, cosigned by Cornwell himself:
Following the tradition of previous novels, the cover doesn’t spoil anything, but we can assume that’s Uhtred’s torso we’re looking at. The title doesn’t give away much either, as the term “war lord” appears often in the novels to describe prominent warriors of the era. At any rate, we still don’t have a US release date, although the Audible version is listed as being available May 28, which seems awfully early but there you go. Typically, the U.S. versions of the novels have been released a month after the UK versions.
The last entry in the series, Sword of Kings, was released in the Fall of 2019, and I quite enjoyed what felt like a reset for Uhtred son of Uhtred. Still, all good things must come to an end, and Uhtred is getting on in age in the novels, to the point that it’s starting to become a tad unbelievable he’s still stomping around the English countryside.
Usually, Netflix has adapted two of Cornwell’s books for every one season of The Last Kingdom. The upcoming fourth season will adapt The Pagan Lord and The Empty Throne and arrive on April 26th. That’ll leave five more before the series takes its final bow. Maybe two more seasons sticking to the two-books-per-season format and one whole season for the final book?
Destiny is all!
