Organizers “hopeful” that San Diego Comic-Con can proceed in July
By Dan Selcke
It’s no secret that the coronavirus is shutting down tons of live events right now. Emerald City Comic Con, E3, and Ace Comic Con were all cancelled for fear of spreading the disease, which is for the good: the more people are in one place, the greater the risk of contraction, so it’s important to maintain social distance; please consult your government’s guidelines.
But what of events scheduled for later in the year? No one seems to know with certainty when the worst of this pandemic will be over, but one theory is that the virus will recede — at least for a while — when the summer months roll around and it’s too hot for it to survive. And of course we all hope that testing and targeted interventions will improve by that point and at least get the crisis to a point where it’s manageable.
Theater chains like AMC seem to be banking on this happening, as they say they’re looking to reopen theaters in mid-June. And the organizers of the San Diego Comic-Con, which is scheduled to run Thursday, July 23 through Sunday, July 26, are holding out hope that it will be safe to come out of the house by then.
"To our amazing Comic-Con and WonderCon fans: We understand how difficult the current climate has been for all of us and appreciate your continued support through these trying times. No one is as hopeful as we are that we will be able to celebrate #SDCC2020 together come July.As we continue to monitor the situation with local authorities, we will post updates on our social channels! Until then, remember: “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spirt of overwhelming obstacles.” — Christopher Reeve"
SDCC is probably the biggest comic con on Earth, with lots of celebrities showing up and announcements being made. I imagine that, even if it goes forward as planned, it’ll operate in a bit of a reduced capacity this year, but we’ll see.
SDCC isn’t the only summer convention looking to go ahead. Con of Thrones, the world’s foremost celebration of all things Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire, is also keeping a close watch on things, but as of now, it’s moving forward.
We’re hoping for the best!
