Blood and laughter behind the scenes of The Last Kingdom

We’re now officially in April, or as we like to call it, Last Kingdom Month, because the fourth season of Netflix’s medieval drama drops on April 26th. And while we might not have a trailer (yet), we do have a bevy of behind-the-scenes images to pore over!

But first, something odd and different: Adrian Bouchet, better known as the Saxon warrior Steapa, stood in for WWE star Drew McIntyre in a promotional shoot for McIntyre’s upcoming title match against Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 36. What do we think, areslings? Does Bouchet resemble to gigantic wrestler?

Hopefully those trunks didn’t cut off any circulation.

Okay, on to the show: the official Last Kingdom Instagram account shared a look back at some of the series’ biggest moments, and pointing out that fans have just enough time to sneak in a one-episode-a-day rewatch before April 26.

Oh the memories. Oh the hair.

Elsewhere, the Lady Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth) posts on set:

Aelswith is one of the most hated women in Wessex, but Butterworth is quite the fun follow on Instagram.

In another image, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) gets a touch-up during what appears to be a nasty battle scene:

Next up, we’ve got a shot of Finan (Mark Rowley) doing what he does best: having a good time, singing to nature in full costume.

#FinanFanForLife.

In another behind-the-scenes pic, Steapa teaches the new king, Edward (Timothy Innes), how to be a proper warrior:

Hopefully those are blunted swords, for Edward’s sake.

Easily the best photos of the batch are these final three:

The first two images show Finan (Mark Rowley), Osferth (Ewan Mitchell) Uhtred and Beocca (Ian Hart) at what looks like Uhtred’s home of Cookham. Osferth’s cross-bedecked armor in particular is pretty cool-looking.

And the final image shows Aelswith alongside Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller) and we assume his daughter Aelflaed (Amelia Clarkson). Not quite sure why Aethelhelm’s robe appears so bloody, though.

We’re almost there, everyone. Destiny is all!
