Mark Hamill pens touching letter to Star Wars fans

Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker himself, recently took to Twitter to write a heartfelt letter of appreciation to all the passionate Star Wars fans out there, young and old, who have kept the franchise going strong throughout all nine movies (and spinoffs) in what is now known as the Skywalker Saga.

The actor played Luke Skywalker in six of the nine movies, not appearing in the prequel trilogy but reprising his beloved role in the sequel trilogy, albeit with much less screen time. Of course, the original trilogy were his formative movies, and remain the most loved movies in the franchise today.

“A few thoughts as one era ends and another begins…” Hamill captioned his tweet. He mentions some fun bits of Star Wars trivia, like how Luke Skywalker’s original name was Luke Starkiller. And the first title for A New HopeThe Adventures of Luke Starkiller, as taken from the Journal of the Whills, Saga I: The Star Wars.

More touchingly, Hamill thanks the fans for sticking with the movies each step of the way. “I am deeply thankful for all your continued enthusiasm and dedication to George’s faraway galaxy, which will continue to grow with new storytellers building an even bigger gallery, filled with heroes, villains, action, romance, and, of course, The Force.”

This isn’t the first time Mark Hamill has shown his class on Twitter. In March, former Star Wars actor Andrew Jack sadly passed away after contracting the coronavirus at age 76. Hamill sent out his condolences and a touching tribute to his former colleague. “He was such a kind gentleman who was deeply gifted & beloved by all who knew him,” he tweeted. “My deepest condolences to his family.”

Disney is taking a break from Star Wars movies for a while, focusing instead of successes like The Mandalorian on Disney+. But the movies will return, but when they do, the characters we’ve come to know very likely won’t be a part of it. This is indeed the end of an era.

The Force will be with you, always.
