Eliza Butterworth (Aelswith) takes you behind the scenes of The Last Kingdom season 4

With the fourth season of the excellent medieval drama The Last Kingdom dropping in mere weeks (April 26), Netflix is giving fans a look behind the scenes with “A Day in the Life of Eliza Butterworth,” who plays King Alfred’s now-widowed but still powerful wife, Lady Aelswith.

The nearly five-minute-long video was shot during season four production in Budapest. Let’s check it out, arselings!

As Butterworth announces during the drive to the set from her hotel, “let’s have some Saxon adventures,”  so let’s see if there are any season 4 clues and goodies in here.

Butterworth is always great fun, from describing how she summons Lady Aelswith’s famous look of contempt (imagine “sucking the most sour lemon ever on the planet”) to letting us follow her into make-up to showing us some of her made-up on-set handshakes. Her filming on her phone as the line of horses go by is great, as is her goofing with Timothy Innes (Aelswith’s son Edward, the new king). We’d expect those two to have a healthy set of new scenes together; the pair love each other but see the world quite differently and often butt heads.

It’s a bit hard to see, but in one shot taken on a castle set at night, it looks like Aldhelm (James Northcote) and Edward are chatting, which could have some interesting implications. Butterworth is called to set in what appears to be a new costume and hairstyle for her character. We see Aelswith react to something, although not we’re not sure what, before Butterworth bids us farewell.
