Jamie and Jocasta grapple with loss in a clip from this Sunday’s new Outlander

Outlander broke our hearts just a couple of weeks ago as we saw Murtagh Fitzgibbons take his final breath, dying in the arms of his godson Jamie Fraser. And so we bid farewell to this beloved character.

Fans of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels already dealt with Murtagh’s death a while back — in the books, he dies earlier in the series, at the Battle of Culloden. My heart goes out to all of those fans who had to live it over again. It was hard enough just the once.

In any case, all fans should prepare for this Sunday’s upcoming episode, where the characters will sort through the fallout of Murtagh’s death, among other things. In a new clip from Entertainment Weekly, Jocasta and Jamie prepare to bury Murtagh and lay him to rest.

Is anyone else ugly crying already?

It appears that Jocasta, Murtagh’s lover, doesn’t have a headstone for the grave. It’s definitely an awkward situation given that she’s engaged to another, but I don’t blame her for wanting to do something for the man she loved so much, even though they were never married. And leave it to Jamie to say the perfect thing this kind of situation. “Neither were we father and son, but it doesn’t make the pain any less, or easier to bear.”

You’d be right about that, Jamie; just because we knew we’d lose Murtagh one day didn’t make his loss any easier on us, either.

The next episode of Outlander, “Famous Last Words,” airs this Sunday on Starz. We’ll get through it together.
