Lost 322 and 323: “Through the Looking Glass”

You can love or hate the ending of Lost, but there’s no arguing that the show changed television forever. Before Westworld burst onto the scene with its complicated time jumps and surprising twists and turns, Lost was doing it better with half the budget.

The show took place on a remote island that becomes the home of the survivors of the downed Oceanic Flight 815. There were smoke monsters and polar bears, and a mysterious hatch that opened up to reveal a large underground living space with all the comforts of home.

The show had a massive ensemble cast, but the two characters everyone loved the most were Dr. Jack Shepard (Matthew Fox) and Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly). Sawyer (Josh Holloway) was my favorite, but that’s a discussion for another time.

During its six-season run, Lost produced some unparalleled episodes of television, but none better than the two-part season 3 finale, “Through the Looking Glass.”

Two things set these episodes apart from the rest of the series: first, there’s the flash-forward that we all thought was a flashback, the one that ended with the memorable line, “We have to go back, Kate.” Then there’s the tragic death of Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan), who before he perished imparted an important message to the others about their survival.

Damn, I’m still not over Charlie’s death.
