San Diego Comic-Con 2020 is cancelled

San Diego Comic-Con, the world’s foremost celebration of all things pop culture, was set to move forward this July, as it’s done for years before. The con has come around like clockwork every year since 1970, but with California still under strict lockdown orders in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year’s convention will cancelled, according to a new press release.

Obviously, lots of big events have been getting cancelled or pushed back thanks to the coronavirus lately, but I think there was hope that events scheduled out far enough ahead of time, like SDCC, might be okay. But the grim fact is that no one is sure when it will truly be safe to gather in public spaces again.

And even if it is safe by July, a big convention like SDCC requires a lot of prep, and with so many businesses basically out of commission while the world rides this out, there may have not been enough time to get it to a place where it could deliver what fans are used to.

This also has me thinking about other July conventions, like Con of Thrones, which is scheduled to go down in Orlando, Florida from July 17-19. They were still adding new things to the lineup as late as last month, and Florida has made headlines for being a little more lax with shutting down events compared to other states, but still, I dunno. We’ll see.

The next San Diego Comic-Con will be held on July 22-25, 2021.
