DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Episode 509: “Zari, Not Zari”

While The Flash struggled to keep us entertained, Legends of Tomorrow was as funny and engaging as ever…well, except for one heartbreaking moment we’ll get to soon.

Whenever a show returns from a hiatus, it’s nice when they don’t miss a beat. But what I absolutely love about this week’s episode of Legends of Tomorrow is Tala Ashe’s performance. When we first thought we were losing Zari forever, I was heartbroken. I’m so glad that she’s still a part of the Arrowverse. Ashe does such an amazing job playing her…both versions of her. The influencer version of Zari has been hilarious and entertaining, and so very different from the Zari we had gotten used to.

In “Zari, Not Zari,” Ashe bring both versions of the character to the fore. Influencer Zari remembers the old Zari and starts doing things that Zari used to do: hacking, playing video games, etc.

Realizing something strange is going on, Zari takes a trip into Behrad’s totem, where there reside bits and pieces of the consciousnesses of past totem holders. She comes face-to-face with the old Zari, and it’s here where we really see what Ashe can do: both versions seem very distinct. I’m always taken aback at how great Ashe truly is, and I’m glad this episode highlighted her talents.

While Zari is on this head trip, Constantine, Charlie, and Sara head to Vancouver to find the second piece of the Loom of Fate. Any guesses as to where exactly they go? THE SET OF SUPERNATURAL’S FINAL SEASON! It was such a fun way to do a “crossover” and while Sam and Dean Winchester didn’t make an appearance, their car “Baby” did. That was fun, wasn’t it?

Anyway, this trip proves to be a hot mess because Charlie’s sister Atropos shows up. Not only does she attack Constantine, she shape-shifts into him, manages to steal the second Loom of Fate from Charlie, and then gets into the Waverider so she can grab the first piece!

This is where the episode takes a devastating turn. Since Zari is still within the totem trying to figure things out, Behrad is left to deal with an angry and ambitious Atropos. He has no choice but to hand the first piece over, but it’s not enough to save his life. Evil, evil Atropos kills him with one swoop of her sword.

Let’s just say Zari’s reaction to finding out Behrad is dead is still seared in my mind. It was so incredibly sad, and it’s a side of this Zari we haven’t really seen yet.

Thanks to some quick maneuvering by Sara, they’re able to get rid of Atropos and throw her into the space outside of time. Unfortunately, Charlie has to cut her hand off to make this happen, but at least the pieces are left behind, and Atropos is gone.

A now-livid Zari is determined to find a way to bring Behrad back by helping Constantine find the other pieces of the Loom of Fate. Something tells me this won’t end well.

We also get a mini-tangent with Mick’s storyline this week. After learning he has a 16-year old daughter with his high school fling, he really wants to change her attitude towards him. Ava attempts to help him by going back in time with him to put Mick in his daughter’s memories. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to help, but hey, keep trying Mick!

Side note: How adorable was the Halloween scene where his daughter dressed up like Captain Cold?

Grade: A

Alright, Arrrowverse fans, that’s a wrap on this week’s episodes. As you can see, Legends of Tomorrow was a great treat after a month-long break. I think The Flash could certainly learn from them.

With shows on a weird schedule, it’s unclear how the Arrowverse shows will attempt to wrap things up for their current seasons. Most of them didn’t finish shooting their seasons (apart from Legends) so I’m curious as to how this is going to go.

Looks like we’ll have to wait and see! Until next week, Arrowverse!
