Disney is already working on The Mandalorian season 3

We still haven’t seen the second season of The Mandalorian, Disney’s excellent live-action Star Wars series, but creator Jon Favreau is already hard at work on season 3, according to Variety. Apparently, he’s been writing it “for a while,” and the art department has been creating concepts for the third season “for the past few weeks.”

“We’ve just started pre-production and are looking into further adventures for the Mandalorian in Season 3,” said one source. Apparently the production design department started work just a couple days ago, on April 20. We assume they’re working from quarantine, which may slow down the process, but it’s good to hear they’re working at all.

When last we left the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda, they were blasting off into space to try and find Baby Yoda’s home planet, their bond stronger and more adorable than ever before. Season 2 promises to be very interesting, as they search the galaxy while being pursued by the vile Moff Gideon, who’s in possession of the powerful Darksaber and who wants to get his hands on Baby Yoda for as-yet-unknown reasons.

There are a lot of interesting places this story could go, and if future seasons keep pace with the first, which was engaging and thrilling pretty much all the way through, we could be in for the ride of our lives. Clearly, Favreau and company think there’s enough juice in this thing for it to go a few seasons, at least.

And we already know some interesting tidbits about the second season. For example, it looks very likely that Rosario Dawson will turn up as Ahsoka, a fan-favorite Jedi character introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Will she become a permanent fixture? Will she just show up once before being given her own spinoff? Stay tuned.

When will we see new seasons of The Mandalorian on Disney+?

The Mandalorian season 2 wrapped production a few weeks before the big wave of coronavirus lockdown orders hit, so now it’s just about editing and so forth. At the moment, it’s still targeted for release in October, and although we hope that sticks, with so many shows and movies getting pushed back because of the coronavirus, we can’t guarantee anything. I mean, The Walking Dead season 10 finale was in the can, too, but it still had to be delayed because the special effects couldn’t effectively do their work from home. Then again, Disney has more lead time for this.

As for season 3, it’s too early to know anything, although we imagine Disney will want to get out new seasons at a rate of one per year. Hopefully working this far ahead will give them the time they need. The Mandalorian is a beautiful show that uses cutting edge technology; a source said that the department needs “a huge lead time” and that “the gears have started grinding really early on.” Find by us.
