Outlander: Sam Heughan on Jamie’s deepening relationships with Roger and Brianna
By Ariba Bhuvad
Sam Heughan has done a superb job playing Jamie Fraser on the fifth season of Outlander. The character has already gone through a lot of changes, from having to don the British army uniform to living through a near-fatal snake bite. Heughan has put his heart and soul into this role, and Outlander fans couldn’t be more pleased with what we’ve seen so far.
Jamie was convinced he wouldn’t live to see another day after being bit by a poisonous snake in “Monsters and Heroes” and turned to Roger for help with one last thing: killing Stephen Bonnet. We’ve all been waiting for this inevitable face-off, and the idea that Jamie might not be a part of it was killing me. Jamie asks Roger to carry on his plan in the case of his death. He can’t let the man who hurt his daughter roam freely and pose a threat to their family.
Heughan spoke with TV Line about this emotional moment, and the relationship Jamie shares with Brianna. Let’s not forget, they haven’t been in each other’s lives for very long, so it’s still a work in progress of sorts. Nonetheless, Jamie loves Brianna dearly and has become extremely protective over her.
The relationship between Roger and Jamie has been trickier. As a father, he’s had a hard time forgiving Roger for “thinking about” returning to Brianna. It’s not until “Monsters and Heroes” that Jamie really sees Roger for the man Brianna loves. “He wants the best for his daughter,” Heughan explained. “He’s very protective, Jamie is. God, what an intimidating father-in-law he would be!”
And Jamie never seems scarier than when he’s around Roger. But it looks like things will change starting now: the two finally have a bond only they can understand. “It’s similar to what Claire did to Jamie in that Jamie has an idea about how things should be in his time, and this modern character teaches him there’s another way,” Heughan said. “[It] doesn’t start well, but by the end, I think they find a real respect for each other.”
"[Jamie] is very practical, and Roger’s not. Roger’s completely impractical but has other skills. Jamie probably would wish his daughter had a more capable man in terms of that period [of time], but yeah, he certainly comes into his own, Roger."
The upcoming episode will be a difficult one for both men as they head to Wylie’s Landing to confront Stephen Bonnet. Ugh, I’m not ready, guys!
Brace yourselves, Outlander fans: the next episode is going to be a wild one.
