Predictions, Hopes and Destiny
More so than past seasons, season 4 feels like a reset for Uhtred and friends. With a slew of new characters and titans such as Alfred passing away, medieval England feels very different than it used to. Where does that leave our favorite characters?
We know from real world history that Edward is successful in continuing his father’s dream to unite England, but that doesn’t mean we have to see it this season. The Danes are formidable foes, but they have slowly been suffering losses since appearing unstoppable in the show’s first season. If Mercia and Wessex can fully unite this season, we’re guessing that means the end of the Danes as a power in England, at least in the short term.
As for Uhtred himself, although we know he makes it back to Bebbanburg, something tells us he won’t be successful in retaking it. Unless Uhtred has assembled an army we don’t know about, Bebbanburg is a formidable fortress, and not one likely to fall to an overnight plan. Of course, Uhtred does always manage to pull a win from the jaws of defeat, so anything is possible.
Perhaps most intriguing is the role Sigtryggr might play. Seeing a Dane side with Uhtred would be interesting, and Sigtryggr doesn’t seem like your run-of-the-mill barbarian. We’re also looking forward to seeing Uhtred as a father. The show has downplayed that aspect of his life, but with his children now older, Uhtred will have to engage with his kids as he pursues his goals.
Finally, as with any good show, we’d love to see one of The Last Kingdom’s outstanding villains sent to Valhalla. Sure, we’ll miss characters like Cnut, Aethelred or Aelfric, but it’s always fun to see one of the bad guys go down. Hopefully they don’t take one of our favorite heroes with them on the way, but that’s always a possibility on The Last Kingdom. Destiny is all!
