Star Wars: The Clone Wars boss explores the end of the show

Star Wars: The Clone Wars has just two episodes remaining. For writer/executive producer Dave Filoni — who co-created the animated show with George Lucas himself — that last episode will mark the end of a journey that began back in 2008. Over the years, the series has aired on Cartoon Network, Netflix and finally Disney+. It takes place over the course of the Star Wars prequel films: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Now that things are coming to an end, he can finally look back on the whole journey.

“One of the big questions I had to answer on this show with these characters in this war is where in the heck were they during the film saga?” Filoni told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Why are they absent? There’s probably a compelling story there. Having done Star Wars Rebels , I really did it thinking I wasn’t ever going to .”

Filoni — working alongside Lucas — created the character of Ahsoka Tano, a Jedi-in-training who ended up becoming one of the most beloved characters in all of Star Wars lore. He also made sure to develop the father/daughter relationship she shared with clone captain Rex in Rebels.

Through their eyes, we’ll see “how things went down” during Order 66, the galactic order Emperor Palpatine enacted that wiped out nearly all the Jedi in existence.

Once The Clone Wars airs its finale episode on Star Wars Day (May the Fourth), Filoni will be able to focus solely on post-production on the second season of The Mandalorian, which he oversees alongside creator Jon Favreau. That show’s second season is slated to debut on Disney+ in October, and filming had already wrapped when the COVID-19 pandemic forced almost everyone indoors, meaning a lot of the post-production work can be safely done from home.

For now, little is known about The Mandalorian season 2, but the tastiest nugget of news is that Rosario Dawson may show up as Ahsoka Tano, finally in the flesh. Filoni didn’t discuss that topic specifically, but is impressed with the love fans have for the character.

“It’s grown so much from ‘Who is this character?’ and ‘Why does Anakin have a padawan?’ to somebody people say they like to see,” he said. “It’s a credit to everybody involved with her character over the years to bring value to her and dimensions as a character.”

I, for one, can’t wait to see Ahsoka and Rex react to Order 66 and the knowledge that Anakin Skywalker betrayed the Jedi Order. Watch it all unfold when Star Wars: The Clone Wars airs the first of its final two episodes, “Shattered,” on Friday, May 1, followed by “Victory and Death” on Monday, May 4.
