Black Mirror creator doesn’t think the world needs more Black Mirror right now

Black Mirror imagines a crazy dystopian future where technology goes out of control and rules our lives. And it doesn’t always feel like some faraway, futuristic thing. Many times, the series depicts our here and now, with minor tweaks that bring home just how potentially frightening our technology-driven reality can be. I mean, how many times have you watched Black Mirror and thought to yourself: this sort of feels like my life now? I know I have.
Black Mirror has a tendency to get really dark, really fast. At the moment, it almost feels like we’re living in some kind of dystopia, with millions of people around the world still in lockdown and out of work thanks to the coronavirus, so maybe “really dark” isn’t what we need right now. Speaking to Radio Times, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker said that, given how grim and scary things have been of late, he’s not working on anything for the next season. And that could be for the best.
“I’ve been busy, doing things,” Brooker said. “I don’t know what I can say about what I’m doing and not doing. At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”
Obviously, at some pointe, we all want more Black Mirror, but I’m in agreement with Brooker here. For the time being, I’m good taking a beat from bleak material like this. I’m all for Brooker doing more comedy; anything to laugh.
Still, if you’re missing Black Mirror, you can always get your fill by rewatching some of the classics. Or better yet, dive into “Bandersnatch,” the interactive Black Mirror movie will take up hours of your time.
We will get through this, folks, and when we do, there will hopefully be new episodes of Black Mirror — and everything else — waiting for us on the other side. Maybe the next season could have a bit of a lighter tone? Black Mirror meets The Office, perhaps?
