DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Episode 511: “Ship Broken”
When the Arrowverse feels bleak and mundane, we can always count on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow to save the day. This show never takes itself seriously, which is the beauty of it.
While shows like Supergirl and Arrow have elements of humor to them, it’s usually there to break up the more serious moments. Legends is different. This whole episode revolves around a hellhound Gary took pity on and brought onto the Waverider. But there’s a slight problem: The dog is actually the Son of Sam‘s demon dog, the one the famous serial killer claimed convinced him to murder people. Yah, Legends went there.
Team Legends has been focused on just one task recently: gathering the Loom of Fate pieces so they can bring Behrad back to life. It’s proving harder than expected, especially as the ship begins to break down. Why is it breaking down? Well, we can all blame the adorable, murderous dog for that one; he’s been secretly mind-controlling everyone to destroy parts of the ship.
No one realizes this, of course, until they pay closer attention to the security footage. The dog is barking orders to each of them in every shot!
Amidst the madness, Zari shines in the episode as she’s pitted against Astra, who has her own reasons for wanting the Loom of Fate. Let’s just say Zari does not trust Astra in the slightest, and this rivalry results in some profound moments.
We’ve seen Zari change a lot over the season, but I am loving that we’re getting bits and pieces of the old Zari back now. And there’s nothing more hilarious than seeing the social media guru Zari hacking Gideon and the Waverider to figure out what’s going on. I simply love it!
What I found unexpected and strange during this episode is seeing Sara wake up from her coma…blind. And not only that, she suddenly has the power to see the future by simply touching someone’s hand.
That said, she still kicks plenty of butt. I think she might be even better at it with no sight. It’s unclear where they’re going with Sara’s newfound blindness, because once Gideon is up and running again, she doesn’t find any abnormalities in Sara’s health.
The episode’s conclusion is every bit as hilarious and action-packed as we could have expected. Once they realize Gary Jr. (Gary’s name for the hellhound) is indeed a dog snatched from Hell, things get crazy. The dog comes into its true form and begins ravaging the ship, thirsty for blood.
But worry not, the team defeats the hellhound and Constantine sends it right back to Hell.
On board the ship this episode is Mick’s daughter, Lita, and the two have a separate storyline going on in the background. I do love seeing Mick mature since he learned he’s a father. I think it’s always been inside of him, and I’m loving seeing it play out. Give us more!
The Legends still have quite the task ahead of them, but fret not, because next week, they’re going all-in on the 80s.
I cannot wait.
Grade: B+
And that’s a wrap on Arrowverse shows for the week! Shout-out once again to Melissa Benoist for her directorial debut on Supergirl, you did us proud!
Until next week!
