The Last Kingdom: What couples are we shipping ahead of season 5?

What couple are you shipping on Netflix’s The Last Kingdom? With the momentous season 4 behind us, the possibilities for romance and ruin are many. Finan and Eadith are sharing puppy-eyed glances and attraction has ignited between Stiorra and Sigtryggr. And who wasn’t pained by the separation of Uhtred and Aethelflaed after it took them so long to get together? Let’s take a look at the pairings headed for love or heartbreak in season 5.

Finan and Eadith (Temperature: smoldering hot)

Everybody loves Finan, so it’s no surprise Eadith does too. He’s a lovable scoundrel and she’s a goodhearted woman with a checkered family history — they’re perfect for each other. They’re already obviously in love, so season 5 is primed to pull this relationship trigger. Finan so deserves a girlfriend, and Eadith so deserves a guy who adores her. They’re fun, loyal and courageous and we want them to be happy, if only for a little while.

Stiorra and Sigtryggr (Temperature: beginnings of a bonfire)

Uhtred’s daughter Stiorra is certainly a chip off the old block; she’s as passionate, headstrong and adventurous as her father. Stiorra is young but she knows what she wants, and she wants an exciting life and she wants Sigtryggr. While it seems an odd pairing at first glance, the Stiorra/Sigtryggr match looks inevitable: they’re both good people, pragmatic but loving, and we know Stiorra will flourish in the Dane culture of her mother with a good man at her side. It seems impossible that they won’t evolve into a power couple with a big role to play.

Uhtred and Aethelflaed (Temperature: cold as a corpse, apparently)

The epic Uhtred and Aethelflaed relationship has been added to this list because they’re both still alive and there is a distinct possibility that the showrunners might hook them up again.

The Last Kingdom likes to keep its hero Uhtred footloose and fancy free, romantically speaking, at the start of most seasons. We were able to enjoy Uhtred and Aethelflaed’s love affair throughout most of season 4, but as usual, it was over before the credits rolled.

Uhtred’s romances usually don’t end well: in season 1, his wife Mildrith was humiliated and ended up in a nunnery. The mysterious Queen Iseult got chopped on the battlefield. The sturdy Gisela was a perfect match for Uhtred through season 2 but died in childbirth in the first episode of season 3, and Uhtred’s affair with the dangerous Skade ended with him drowning her in a pond. Uhtred and Aethelflaed found love in season 4, but her vow of chastity has sent the wounded Uhtred packing.

Fortunately, Aethelflaed survived her breakup with Uhtred. The writers may well test her resolve to remain chaste when Uhtred is around. But it seems quite unlikely that their relationship has any kind of future, so Aethelflaed may have to suffer the emotional agony of watching Uhtred find a new partner, as he tends to do. Maybe the lovelorn Aldhelm might have a shot with her now.

Who do you Ship?

Though we included the terminated Uhtred and Aethelflaed love story because fans can still root for their relationship to recover, The Last Kingdom sure looks like its setting up the Finan/Edaith and Stiorra/Sigtryggr pairings for plenty o’ romance. We can’t imagine that the now single Untred will go stag for long in season 5, though we probably have yet to meet his new love interest.
