Supergirl Episode 518: “The Missing Link”
Like The Flash, Supergirl will also have a shortened season thanks to the coronavirus. With just one more episode left before the finale, Supergirl shows no signs of stopping with an action-packed episode. But most importantly, we finally have some progress on the Lena Luthor front. After a “will they, won’t they” friendship between her and Kara, Lena finally sees the light. And I’m so happy about it. These two work better together, rather than pitted against one another.
Sorry not sorry, Lex.
Another character possibly seeing the light is Brainy, who has been in cahoots with Lex for a while now. After last week’s sun eater encounter, Brainy figures out that Lex was behind it all, and that he put Team Supergirl in extreme danger.
Lex’s goal has been trying to get onto the Leviathan ship. Does Brainy really think Lex won’t destroy anyone and everyone in his path to get what he wants? This is Lex Luthor we’re talking about.
Lex acquires the weapon he needed to impress Gemma, and she, in turn, takes it straight to Rama Khan. While he isn’t amused by Gemma, he finally has the weapon back, and now he’s broken free and can wreak havoc on anyone with “Super” in their name.
Meanwhile, Team Supergirl is down on their luck and having difficulty tracking down Leviathan. The DEO is not a resource they have at their disposal, so they look to Kelly’s friend, Pete (hi, Sean Astin!) to help locate Rama Khan. He’s more than willing to help Kara and Alex find the records they’re looking for, and it makes me realize I need friends like him in my life. The guy is helpful, to say the least.
One thing leads to another, and soon they discover a pattern exists across history. But it’s hard to find out more because Pete’s superiors refuse to let him learn. And it gets worse. Not only are they chased out, but Pete’s family becomes a target of surveillance. Helping the Supers doesn’t come easy.
My favorite part of the episode is when Pete tells Alex she should consider going into hiding. Whoever is against them isn’t going to back down easily, and it will put her in danger. Perhaps she should take the route of vigilantism? HECK YES, WE ARE SO HERE FOR THAT!
At Obsidian North, Kelly and William work together to figure out Margot’s plan before she bit the bullet. Andrea shuts that down immediately, but it doesn’t stop William from poking around anyway…and getting abducted.
All roads lead to Rama Khan, and Team Supergirl does what it can to stop him from causing an earthquake. But Brainy takes Rama Khan away before anyone can question him, and then proceeds to talk to him in a weird language that no one recognizes. But hey, we understood Lex Luthor!
I’m sorry to report that not only does Rama Khan get away, but he also destroys the DEO. Watching the building crumble made me think back to NBC’s shortlived series Powerless. I wonder what they would have done to prevent this situation.
Before Lena has an epiphany and decides to fix things with Kara, she has a rather difficult encounter at the prison, where she’s working on the Non Nocere programming. Something goes incredibly wrong and the inmates go all Walking Dead on each other as a riot breaks out.
In order to fix the mess, Lena demolishes all the equipment because she’s finally come to the realization of how wrong all of this is. Come on girl, you are working with your super-evil brother, what did you think was going to happen?
It comes as no shock whatsoever when Lex reveals that he’s been fooling Lena all along just to show her how horrible humanity truly is. He completely loses it as Lena walks out on him, hopefully forever.
Jon Cryer kills it in this scene, and gives us a version of Lex Luthor that we’ve never really seen before. I was blown away by his performance. If there was ever a time to be afraid of Lex Luthor, it’s now.
The episode ends with Lex getting an invitation onto the Leviathan ship, much to Brainy’s displeasure. But hey, at least Lena has extended an olive branch towards Kara. And while Kara didn’t seem too eager about it, I think we can remain hopeful that these two will indeed come together.
Team Supergirl is about to go ham, and Lex Luthor better watch out!
