Sorry, Deadpool fans, but we’ve got some super-duper bad news for you: Deadpool 3 isn’t happening for at least five years, or at least, it’s not on Marvel’s schedule.
This info comes straight from comic book pro Rob Liefelt, the co-creator of Deadpool. “Until a movie is put on a schedule, it’s not taken seriously,” Liefeld told Io9. “And what people don’t like is that I have assessed the schedule for the next — give or take — five years and I don’t see ‘Deadpool’ on it. I don’t see that it can arrive earlier than that.”
So there you have it, Rob Liefeld has seen Disney’s five-year schedule for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Deadpool 3 isn’t on it.
That said, are the creatives behind the series working on anything at all?
"Do I know that there is no movement on a Deadpool 3 right now? I know that…My take on it is it’s not a huge priority. I wouldn’t look for it any time soon. And if it was greenlit tomorrow, it’s not coming out until I’m a lot older.”"
Disney bought the rights to make Deadpool movies when it purchased 21st Century Fox. Ryan Reynolds, at least, is thrilled to start working with his new corporate overlords, so it’s a shame that apparently Disney has no immediately plans to bring back the Merc With A Mouth. Maybe it doesn’t fit into their family-friendly ethos?
When Disney does decide to make Deadpool 3, Liefeld thinks there’s only one man who should be in charge. “My opinion is Ryan should be steering the ship and just completely handed the reins,” he said. “Even to the point of plugging characters in…Give him three characters he can integrate and let him integrate them. If people ask what I want to see, that’s where it begins. Just please don’t micromanage the guy. Just give him free rein.”
From your lips to Mickey’s giant ears, Rob Liefeld.
