Supergirl Episode 519: “Immortal Kombat”

Fans of Supergirl have been waiting a very long time for Kara and Lena to finally air out their grievances. There’s been a lot of back and forth between the two women, especially after Lena finally learned that Kara was Supergirl. I get it, it’s not cool to have your BFF keep such a huge secret from you, but it was for her safety and protection.

Luckily, after some back and forth over the last season or so, these two women finally get each other, and I think it’s safe to say that Supercorp is back in business. This was an aspect of the early season 5 finale that I was totally on board for. When Lena and Kara are united, they are unstoppable, and I’m here for it!

I liked how this season of Supergirl dealt with real-world technological issues. Supergirl’s version of EvilCorp, Obsidian, was the foundation on which season 5 was built. The parallels drawn between the crazy virtual reality — inducing the Obsidian contact lenses — and our actual world were very intriguing.

With the coronavirus pandemic sweeping over our world, people have been using the internet a lot more. Whether that’s a good thing I’ll leave to you, but it’s left a lot of us craving real human interaction, with Zoom meetings the closest we can get. But as we see throughout the fifth season of Supergirl, the world of modern and advanced technology ends up becoming a disastrous thing. And with Lex Luthor behind all the madness, you know things are going go from bad to horrendous.

Supergirl’s early finale attempted to wrap up the Leviathan story as best it could, and it did not disappoint. Honestly, I’m impressed with how it pulled this off. Supergirl either has some amazing editors, or they filmed just enough to make this feel like an ending even though there were supposed to be a couple more episodes.

Anyway, back to the plot: Lex Luthor finally ends up on Leviathan’s ship, and things get pretty chaotic. Before we get to one of the season’s most epic showdowns, we get to see Alex in her brand new suit, which is less suit and more makeup, but it’s cool nonetheless. In order to take down Rama Khan and company, Supergirl needs extra protection from all the Kryptonite they have.

And it’s at this moment that Lena comes forward to offer her expertise. She’ll make Kara a suit that will deflect Kryptonite, which is much like the one Lena made for her before Crisis changed the world. At first, Kara is reluctant, but she understands there is not much else she can do. So while she scoots off to the lab with Lena, J’onn and M’gann use their shapeshifting skills to distract Rama Khan and his cronies.

The season 5 finale finally gives Brainy the story he deserves, and while it brings up a lot of questions about season 6, I was really happy to see them finally change his story up a bit. During this episode, Brainy realizes that Lex has been laying the groundwork for the moment he can eliminate Team Supergirl. After taking off his personality inhibitors and being under Lex’s beck and call for the better half of season 5, Brainy finally uses his brain and lends his super friends a hand.

Brainy’s plan is to sneak onto the ship and upload the code that would ultimately shrink Rama Khan and company down. Unfortunately, this comes at a heavy price: Brainy’s life. You see, Lex was protected from the force field on Leviathan’s ship, but Brainy, not so much.

In order to take Rama Khan down, Brainy had to sacrifice himself and let the force field consume him. I don’t want to say R.I.P. just yet, because I refuse to believe we lost Brainy just as he redeemed himself, and we’ll see.

Meanwhile, Eve is a huge resource for Kara and Lena, especially during Obsidian’s wacky Unity Festival, which is set to bring literally billions of people into virtual reality and then promptly end their lives. Yah, no big deal. The fate of the world just hangs in the balance, and Supergirl is basically the only one who can save it. All in a day’s work for these guys.

Thinking quickly, Lena makes copies of Supergirl in the VR festival so she can talk to everyone at once. And it works! The world is saved! Yahoo! I promise I’m not being sarcastic, it was actually pretty clutch.

I’m happy to report that by the time everything wrapped up on the Supergirl season 5 finale, Kara forgave Lena for her transgressions. I’m just hoping that Lena has truly decided to be “good” now, whatever that means, and will be by Kara’s side. Especially considering Mama Luthor and Lex have something devious in the works now that Lex has his hands on the shrunken Rama Khan.

Is Brainy alive? What are Mama Luthor and Lex planning?

Oh, also, is Brainy alive? Did I ask that already?
