Check out more beautiful art from the special edition of A Clash of Kings

The Folio Society’s collector’s edition of A Clash of Kings is out! Featuring  six full-page illustrations and two double-page spreads from artist Jonathan Burton, this two-volume repackaging of the second book in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series is a feast for the eyes and the mind. I bet it feels nice in the hands, too.

It even looks like it smells good.

Even if you’ve read A Clash of Kings before, this edition has plenty to recommend it, including endpapers printed with house sigils, eight family trees and “The Kings and their Courts” features detailing the many players in this story. But the star is definitely Burton’s artwork, so let’s take a closer look at some of what he has in store:

Here we have the book’s most action-packed scene, as Tyrion Lannister lights the Blackwater on fire as Stannis Baratheon’s fleet tries to invade King’s Landing.

Jon Snow goes beyond the Wall and must kill a wildling girl named Ygritte, but finds he can’t do it. Spoiler alert for a couple seconds after this illustration.

In King’s Landing, Sansa encounters is in the godswood when she encounters Dontos Hollard, a fallen knight who promises to help her escape the clutches of the wicked King Joffrey. He’s not as pure-hearted as he claims, but Sansa will try anything at this point.

Meanwhile, in the Riverlands, Arya Stark comes on a trio of prisoners, including the enigmatic Jaqen H’ghar. I love the way a lot of these pictures have one prominent color in them, expect in the case of the burning of the Blackwater, which has two: red fire on green.

Finally, in the most evocative picture, Daenerys Targaryen has a frightful vision in the House of the Undying.

And there’s more where that came from. If you want a copy of the new special edition, head here.
