There are plenty of reasons to get excited about Amazon’s forthcoming fantasy series The Wheel of Time. For long-time fans of the books by Robert Jordan, it’s especially thrilling: We’ll soon get to watch beloved books come to life onscreen…at some point.
Filming kicked off in Prague in 2019, with additional shooting being done in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Croatia. Other than that, we haven’t been able to find out much about filming on the show, with Amazon remaining tight-lipped.
The world of The Wheel of Time is vast, packed with different cities, climates, terrain and cultures. I find myself wondering where on this planet the cast and crew could go to capture the feel of the places in Jordan’s novels. We visit places like the White Tower, the Stone of Tear, the Bay of Ebou Dar and the Topless Towers of Cairhein, and it’s important to get them right.
If we ignore petty little concerns like logistics and money, there are numerous real-world places with the right architecture and landscape to stand in for the locations in The Wheel of Time. Let’s take a tour of some of them, sticking generally to parts of the world where the crew actually plans to film. It’s Randland…on Earth!
