Henry Cavill isn’t quite ready to let go of his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe just yet. In fact, Variety confirms that the actor is currently in talks with Warner Bros. to make a return as the Last Son of Krypton.

So far, Henry Cavill has had three major appearances as Superman in the DCEU, having played him in Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and most recently Justice League (2017). He almost made a cameo appearance as Superman in Shazam (2019), but they ended up using a double.

So where might we see him again? It sounds like Warner Bros. is thinking of starting with some cameo appearances, possibly in upcoming DCEU movies likeThe Batman, The Suicide Squad, Aquaman 2 or Shazam 2Variety all but rules out seeing Cavill suiting up to film more scenes in the long-awaited Snyder Cut of Justice League coming to HBO Max next year, although anything is possible.

Although Ben Affleck officially decided to leave behind the role of Batman — Robert Pattinson will play him in the new movie — Cavill never ruled out returning to the Man of Steel, even though Warner Bros. did some recalibrating after Justice League wasn’t the barn-burning triumph they were hoping for. Back in December, he told Men’s Health, “The cape is still in the closet… It’s still mine…I’m not going to sit quietly in the dark as all the stuff is going on. I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into.”

"I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see."

Despite all this, there’s no new information about a possible sequel to Man of Steel. That movie did well at the box office, even outgrossing Justice League, so you’d figure a sequel would be easy to get approved, but for now we may have to settle for Cavill’s Superman making guest appearances.

Whatever form these appearances take, fans are very excited over the news:

Outside the DC universe, Henry Cavill is gearing up for the second season of Netflix’s fantasy series The Witcher, which is currently on tap for 2021.
