Doctor Who writer’s new original sci-fi The Human Frontier is out now
By James Aggas
The Human Frontier, a completely original series from the makers of Doctor Who on audio, is out now. Here’s why it’s an extremely exciting release.
The Human Frontier is an audio that I’ve been excited about for a long time. It’s not a Doctor Who story or even a spin-off. It’s a completely original sci-fi story – one that’s solely written by Nicholas Briggs.
If you’re only aware of Doctor Who‘s TV stories, then you’ll likely best know Briggs as the voice of the Daleks for the New Series. But fans of Big Finish’s audios know him for much more than that. As well as voicing many roles in many different series (with his biggest arguably being Sherlock Holmes), Briggs has also written many stories for Big Finish – a company that he’s the creative director of.
Some of these have been Doctor Who stories featuring Classic Series Doctors. These are generally a lot of nostalgic fun, but he’s often been at his very best when he’s written his own spin-offs. In particular, Dalek Empire stands out as one of the grittiest, darkest, and best Doctor Who spin-offs out there, and it’s one that he was the sole writer of. So knowing that he’s written his own completely original sci-fi series as part of the Big Finish Originals range is extremely exciting.

A clash of generations
But what is The Human Frontier? Here’s the official description for the release.
"Two sets of Earth colonists, both setting out for the planet ND492.One crew takes the long route, sleeping for 1,000 years, in secret, on a ship called The Human Frontier. The other crew set off hundreds of years later, at hyper speed. When the sleepers wake as they approach the planet, the hyper-speed crew have been living there for 300 years already – and they have no clue the ‘sleepers’ are about to arrive."
This honestly sounds fantastic. The best sci-fi stories come from the simplest of ideas. In this case: what if two generations of humans, centuries apart from one another, were suddenly brought together? How would each generation react to the other? And what complexities or conflicts would their meeting bring?
Everyone who’s worked on the series seems to be extremely excited about it, including script editor Scott Handcock.
"The setup hooks you and the mystery pulls you through, with some lovely twists and paranoia that people have come to expect, particularly from Nick’s work on The Prisoner. And, as per the Originals’ brief, it’s unlike anything else at Big Finish!"
There’s no question that this sounds like a highly original and extremely exciting release. Expect a review from us on the whole series soon. In the meantime, you can check out The Human Frontier right now by purchasing and downloading it exclusively from Big Finish’s website.
