Dreamcasting the world of The Wheel of Time
By John Fallon
Bruges, Belgium as…Illian
West of Tear lies Illian, a city famous for hosting the Great Hunt of the Horn. Its most prominent feature is a giant circular harbor, the largest port in the known world. Far to the north, the terrain becomes mountainous, dotted by castles and fortifications. Known to be expansionist from time to time, it is feared by its neighbors Altara and Murandy. The city is also known for its two opposing palaces.
The city of Bruges in Belgium is a perfect fit. The city has a massive circular seaport, the palace of the Liberty of Bruges is a gold-trimmed building in the historic city center, and the canals of Bruges provide remarkable scenery that match the descriptions of Illian.
A short flight over Germany from the Czech Republic would land the crew in Bruges, where shooting could begin. The story returns to Illian every now and then, and I’m sure the cast and crew would be happy to return.
