Today, June 3, actor Ahmed Best — known for his role as Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars prequel movies — will return to that galaxy far, far away as the host of an all-new game show for kids: Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge, with episodes uploaded at StarWarsKids.com.

Best himself won’t be the host of the show: his character will be. Keleran Beq is a Jedi Master from the prequel era. And much like the enigmatic Jedi Master Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson), Kelleran Beq will wield a weapon rarely seen in Star Wars canon: The purple-bladed lightsaber.

Over the weekend, Best took to Twitter to explain how and why the purple-bladed lightsaber was created.

So, so Beq and Windu both know how to fuse red and blue kyber crystals — a vital component of lightsabers — to give their weapons their unique colors. That’s a pretty cool in-universe explanation.

We can get even more detailed if we dive deep into Star Wars lore. Thousands of years ago, in the Old Republic era, there was a Jedi form called Juyo, aka Form VII, aka the Ferocity Form — it had a lot of names. Only Jedi who exhibited a steely control over their emotions — and who were able to walk the path between the Light and Dark Side of the Force — practiced Juyo.

When Mace Windu came along, he created an off-shoot of Form VII, calling it Vaapad. He did this to shore up the darkness raging inside him, an emotion that he considered a weakness. His lightsaber crystal was created by combining the traditional Jedi blue-colored Kyber crystal — the crystal all Force-wielders used to power the laser blade of a lightsaber — with a Sith red-colored one.

And now, Keleran Beq is following in Mace Windu’s footsteps. Best took to Instagram to talk a little about his character’s fighting technique:

So the hilt of Master Beq’s lightsaber is big enough for one hand, leaving the off-hand open to use the Force while in combat, earning him the nickname The Bladed Hand.

While I don’t expect we’ll see Master Keleran Beq jump into battle with a Sith Lord on a game show for kids, Sam Witwer — the voice of Maul from The Clone Wars and Solo: A Star Wars Story — will be providing the disembodied voice of a Sith Ghost connected to a Dark Side Holocron, so you never know what could happen.
