4. “Mercy Shall Follow Me” Season 5, Episode 10

This episode will always be remembered as the one where we finally got rid of Stephen Bonnet once and for all. The path to his death wasn’t easy — he kidnapped Brianna and almost sold her — but it does, for real this time.

“Mercy Shall Follow Me” brings an end to the nightmare Brianna had been forced to live for quite some time. And it’s not just Bonnet’s death that makes this episode one of the season’s best, but the manner in which it takes place, which gives Brianna the justice she deserves.

Instead of killing him on the spot, Brianna chooses to have him go through a trial and be convicted of his heinous crimes. We don’t see this take place as the episode jumps to Bonnet’s execution: death by drowning. And just as we’re led to think that Bonnet may somehow escape death once again, Brianna shoots him from a distance, making certain that he’s actually gone.

Though gruesome, having Brianna pull the trigger on her assailant is a very cleansing moment for her. I’m really happy with how the writers chose to end Bonnet’s story. It was the perfect way to give Brianna back all her power, the power he had stolen from her.
