3. “Journeycake” Season 5, Episode 11
Always lurking underneath the fifth season was the possibility that Roger, Brianna, and Jemmy would return to their own time. And after learning that Jemmy could travel through the stones just as his parents and grandmother could, it was all but decided that they would make the trip back home.
One thing I admire about Outlander is that they make these moments as exciting for book-readers who are expecting them as they are for newbies who have never cracked Diana Gabaldon’s novels. It feels like we’re all in this together.
Another reason to love this episode? Ian finally learns the truth about all this time travel business, after he clocks everyone reacting to Jemmy reacting to the “warm” stone. And the fact that his aunt was MIA for a long time and then randomly came back with a daughter.
Family is the foundation of Outlander, so to see Ian finally be brought into the loop really made this episode stand out. It’s nice to see how much he’s developed since we first met him, and how he’s become the man that both Jamie and Claire feel comfortable sharing their biggest secret with.
But the episode’s biggest plot twist hits us unexpectedly: Claire is abducted, and she’s anything but safe.
It’s no wonder Diana Gabaldon wrote this episode: it was incredibly emotional and devastating at the end.
