1. “The Ballad of Roger Mac” Season 5, Episode 7

“The Ballad of Roger Mac” is at the top of this list for one reason: Murtagh. This episode honors the character one final time and does a marvelous job.

This episode focuses on the Battle of Alamance, which not only brings the British face-to-face with the Regulators but also forces us to witness Jamie putting on the Redcoat uniform. That last bit alone almost made this episode fall in the rankings, but then I reminded myself of Murtagh.

Inevitably, Jamie and Murtagh cross paths on the battlefield, and Murtagh takes his final breaths. Sam Heughan and Duncan LaCroix play off of each other so well in this scene, which does justice to their long relationship. As Jamie’s godfather, Murtagh was always a guiding force for Jamie, but as he lay in Jamie’s arms, it felt like Jamie was losing his way as Murtagh was losing his life.

To pull off a scene like this is no easy task, and I think I speak for a lot of fans when I say it’s the season’s best moment. I will never forget how I felt at that moment, and how gut-wrenching that final goodbye was.

This is why it’s my top episode of Outlander season 5: it gave us the goodbye we wanted and deserved.
