8. “Perpetual Adoration” Season 5, Episode 5

Claire’s always been a devoted doctor, and her desire and ability to help others have always come first for her. This episode does a great job of helping viewers understand why Claire felt it was necessary to introduce penicillin to the world a couple of centuries early.

A flashback to the 60s reveals that Claire once had a patient that came in for gallbladder surgery who was allergic to penicillin. Unfortunately, it was administered to him prior to the surgery, and he passed away.

This was a crushing blow to Claire and it eventually resulted in her taking a sabbatical, one that would lead her back to Jamie and the 18th century. Long story short, the penicillin fail broke her heart, she decided to go to Europe with Brianna, ended up in Scotland, and eventually went back through the stones with the help of Roger and Brianna.

I enjoyed “Perpetual Adoration” because this flashback gives us a deeper understanding of Claire’s thought process. She wants to save lives and is willing to do what it takes even if it could disrupt the space-time continuum.

But the best part about this episode?

ADSO.

With the cat in its corner, I’m surprised it isn’t higher.
