Chapter 32: “Four Kings in Shadow”
Traveling without Thom, Rand and Mat arrive at a drab, careworn village known as Four Kings; it’s somewhat rougher than what they’re used to. They stop at the an inn, the common room filled with dangerous folk. Neither of the two like the looks they are getting.
They are shown to their rooms and Rand bars the door, only to find their window also barred, meaning that if anyone tries to get in they’ll have no means of escape. No sooner than they enter, men try to force their way into the room, demanding they submit themselves to the Great Lord of the Dark. All seems lost when suddenly lightning strikes the room, creating a gaping hole in the wall. They scurry out, Mat blinded by the lightning and Rand shocked by the bodies of men lying outside the wall.
This events at Four Kings have the makings of good television. Throughout much of the first book, the One Power is spoken of with awe, with Moiraine impressing upon our heroes how dangerous it can be, especially if used by men, who are driven mad by it. Here, Rand draws on it for the first time, without meaning to. It’s a turning point during his journey with Mat, and a crackling good action scene besides.
