Episode 706: “Nakara”
With Echo, Octavia, Hope, and Gabriel searching the corridors, we finally see what Dioyza has been going through since she was taken. The extreme measures she takes to avoid giving up her memories remind us of her special forces training. Dioyza was once the main antagonist, and she can still be incredibly deadly.
Eventually, she manages to steal a Bardo uniform and pose as a guard while she hunts for an exit. The music here is amazing. It’s upbeat and carefree, which clashes so well with the brutal torture we seeing on screen. When she suddenly runs into Hope and company, the music cuts; it’s a fitting violent snap back to reality. Truly the best opening of the season.
Clarke and friends find themselves on the deserted graveyard planet, Nakara. They quickly locate one of the stones needed to travel through the wormhole and head into the cave where they believe they’ll find it. While they’re crawling through, Raven is attacked by an alien spider but is saved by the Golden Mask armor. When they finally arrive at an opening large enough to stand, the walls begin shifting, creating new rooms and closing old ones. This breaks apart the team and allows them to have individual conversations that conveniently further the plot.
The hard talks end just in time for the walls to shift back to their original state. That’s when Clarke and Raven jump to the conclusion that the cave is actually a giant organism of some kind. When they finally reach their destination, they fight against a horde of the spider creatures, defending Raven as she enters the code to a different planet, and they escape.
After being excited to see how they were going to create another alien world, it was disappointing to see so many dark shots and poorly lit sets. The stone being underground made for a rather bland alien planet.
Back on Sanctum, Indra searches for a way to cut the growing tensions between factions. When she learns of the armory being robbed, she realizes her own power is dwindling as her people grow more divided. She tries to solve the problem of OneCrew not having a clear leader by having Maddie return as a figurehead. But Murphy and others stop her and let Maddie return to her new life. They convince Indra to take command herself in the traditional grounder way. Indra proceeds to win a few fights rather easily as she earns her command of OneCrew.
Indra also tries dealing with the growing threat of Sheidheda. The conversations between Indra and Sheidheda have been some of the best written of the season; despite having few interactions the chemistry between Adina Porter and JR Bourne is strong, which adds weight to their words.
Anyway, Indra’s attempts to keep Sheidheda controlled go poorly when Sheidheda evades an assassination attempt and instead convinces the assassin to aide him in his quest for power. It’s a quick turnaround for the attempted killer, who up until now only existed to kill Russel Prime. He has a new leader to believe in now, a new purpose.
Diyoza and her rescue team find their way to the door they were told was an exit. But right before they escape, Gabriel — having seen enough killing to last a lifetime — stuns his own team and surrenders to the Bardo Golden Masks.
It doesn’t look likely the action will slow down from here. Even with so much happening at once, the answers usually lead to more questions. With everybody finally found, many of the characters must find a new goal to work towards, although they’ll have to survive first.
