Doctor Who news: Free episode of The Diary of River Song

Another free download is available from Big Finish this week – this time an episode from Doctor Who spin-off series The Diary of River Song.

I’m sure we’re all aware of how important River Song is to Doctor Who, especially during Steven Moffat’s era. Across three different Doctors and many episodes, we saw her get up to a lot with her husband, both good and bad. But what adventures did she have when the Doctor wasn’t around?

That’s the question that The Diary of River Song answers. Since Christmas Day 2015 – the same day that The Husbands of River Song was broadcast, in fact – Big Finish Productions has been giving us so many adventures with River. The Diary of River Song explores both River’s life and her character, arguably in an even deeper way than we saw on-screen.

Across seven series so far, River has met many familiar faces, both of her husband and, in one series, those of the Doctor’s worst enemy. More importantly, however, she’s also had plenty of adventures on her own. Five Twenty-Nine from Series 2 is one example. In fact, it’s one of the best. And right now, it’s completely free from Big Finish.

Five Twenty-Nine is a rather bleak and grim story. It’s also one of the best episodes of River’s own series.

Five Twenty-Nine

The second episode from The Diary of River Song: Series 2, Five Twenty-Nine is a story that explores the end of the world. This isn’t a big epic adventure where River gets to save the day, however. Instead, it’s a rather bleak and intimate story, as she does her best to save just one family from the inevitable. It’s dark, emotional, and an absolutely amazing story by John Dorney. And it’s free to download right now from Big Finish’s website.
