2. King Edward wakes up
Where do we even start with the King of Wessex? From his treatment of his mother Aelswith to ignoring his own sons, there was little to like about Edward in season 4. Seemingly always listening to the wrong advice (looking at you, Aethelhelm), Edward was a difficult ruler to cheer for, something we never felt about his father Alfred. Alfred might have been slow to trust or listen to Uhtred, but we never saw him behave with such animosity towards his own family. Still, we’re hoping things can turn around in season 5.
As season 4 came to a close, we saw glimmers of hope for King Edward’s reign. From his cooperation with Aethleflaed to striking a bargain with Sigtryggr, Edward began to think for himself, and surprise, actually made some good decisions. It remains to be seen where his relationship stands with Aelswith given her condition, but we’re hopeful Edward can patch things up there as well.
Ultimately, Edward’s toughest decision might come down to choosing between his two sons, Aethelstan or Elfweard. Historically, we already know who ends up on the throne, but who Edward chose to be his heir remains unclear. I hope Edward doesn’t make a choice that elevates one son over the other. It could end up being the choice we remember him by.
