9. The Rain Wild Chronicles by Robin Hobb

Robin Hobb is something of a legend when it comes to fantasy books. She tells many of her stories in three or four-book clumps, with all of her novels connecting to the wider world she started back in 1995 with Assassin’s Apprentice. Ask any Hobb fan, and you’ll find differing opinions about which series is best.

But for the dragon hunters out there, you’re looking for Hobb’s Rain Wild Chronicles. Starting with Dragon Keeper, the four-part series tells the story of a group of people tasked with escorting dragons to the source of the Rain Wilds river, in the hopes that the newly hatched wyrms can start restoring the dragon population in the Realm of the Elderlings. The baby dragons are malformed and weak, a shadow of the powerful ancestors that ruled the skies. But over the course of their long journey, the dragons and their keepers forge strong bonds as they seek a better way forward.

The Rain Wilds is not the first of Hobbs’ series set in the Elderlings world, but since it is a finished four-part series you can read it without spoiling too much from those other books. And if you do end up enjoying it, many of the characters end up figuring into the final books of Hobb’s Elderling series — which makes Dragon Keeper a solid introduction if you want to get a feel for her world while steel keeping yourself immersed in dragons.
