11.  Winterlands by Barbara Hambly

Barbara Hambley has been writing great dragon stories since the mid 1980s through her Winterlands series. These books follows mainly human characters but revolves around a couple of powerful dragons.

The first book, Dragonsbane, tells the tale of a rag-tag group that sets out to slay a dragon that’s terrorizing the countryside. Only one man is believed capable of killing the beast: Lord John Aversin, the Dragonsbane. But alas, Lord John is not the heroic warrior that many believe him to be, since he earned the title not by slaying a dragon in combat, but by poisoning it. Undeterred, a noble enlists John and a not-very-powerful witch named Jenny Waynest to slay the dragon.

This is a good old-fashioned fantasy quest tale, but with some great twists throw in later in the story. There’s more to the dragon than meets the eye, and the winged beasts have a strong presence throughout all four of Hambley’s Winterlands books.
