14. Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

Back to books that won’t terrify children, Rachel Hartman’s Seraphina series is aimed at the same teen audience for which Eragon was intended, but it’s still an enjoyable read for an adult.

In the kingdom of Goredd, dragons and humans live alongside one another, forging a brave new society together. But as the anniversary of the treaty that keeps both races in line draws near, the crown prince is murdered in a gruesome fashion…a draconian fashion, some might say. Tensions escalate and fingers (and claws) are pointed. Drawn into the center of it all is young Seraphina, a court musician with a mixed human-dragon lineage that she has to hide in order to survive.

The Seraphina books are filled with intrigue and magic, and are a wonderful coming of age story set against the backdrop of a kingdom teetering on the brink of unrest. It’s a finished duology, consisting of Seraphina and Shadow Scale, which makes this a great choice if you want to experience a full story without investing countless hours in a longer series.
