2. Age of Fire by E.E. Knight

One of the things that books do so well is take us inside the head of different characters. For all of the advantages of film and TV, they still can’t sell an internal monologue as well as a book can.

The six Age of Fire books by E.E. Knight tell the story from the perspectives of dragons, putting us not just on the backs of the beasts, but behind the eyes. The first three books each follow a different member of the same clutch of dragon eggs, separated just after birth. Each is a stand-alone book that follows one member of this dragon family as they try to survive in a world where dragons are dwindling as humanoid races grow in prominence.

After the first three books, the back end of the series sees the dragon protagonists’ paths converge in a struggle for political power (yes, dragon politics!) in the underground Lavadome, a hidden kingdom of dragons.

Age of Fire has a lot of trappings that will feel instantly familiar to fantasy fans. There are elves and dwarves, greedy humans and noble hermits. But what’s fresh about this series is the viewpoint. When it comes to books that take you inside the world of a dragon, there aren’t many that can match Age of Fire.
