7. Griffen McCandles by Robert Asprin

If you’re tired of all this serious series on this list and want something absurd, you want the Griffen McCandles series by Robert Asprin.

These books follow the exploits of the titular Griffen McCandles, a guy who gambles his way through college, lazily confident that a cushy family job awaits him on the other side. He only learns what that job is when his uncle reveals the shocking truth: Griffen and his sister Valerie are both dragons. They can shapeshift and breathe fire, and they have a responsibility to be good dragon citizens.

True to his nature, Griffen decides to take his sister and run away from that responsibility. They go somewhere that allows him to put his card-counting talents to good use: the French Quarter of New Orleans. Shenanigans ensue, Griffen runs afoul of the local criminal underground, and things grow ever more ridiculous.

This is a fantasy series in the vein of Terry Pratchett, all about satirical commentary and laugh-out-loud humor. McCandles is about as far of a cry from Smaug as a dragon can get. As the book description puts it, the story is a “breath of hot air.”

Who says dragons can’t be fun?
