8. Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton

Speaking of dragons, family, and fun, another great and hilarious book featuring an all-dragon cast is Jo Walton’s standalone novel Tooth and Claw. Since this one isn’t a series, don’t expect the long-game character stuff you’d see in a yarn like Pern or ASOIAF…but Tooth and Claw makes up for that with Walton’s style, which is unflinchingly funny and thought-provoking by turns.

Tooth and Claw is, in essence, a take on English novels about high society, marriage contracts, family dynamics, and the like. Think stories like Pride & Prejudice, or the works of Anthony Trollope, and you’ll have an idea…except that Walton took those stories about courtly manners and said, “this would all make much more sense if they were dragons.”

The result is Tooth and Claw, a story where the patriarch of a dragon family dies, and his children work through different socially tricky situations to secure his legacy and their own place in the hierarchy. Dragons live in lavishly decorated caves, have to wipe the blood off their scales after meals to remain polite, and figure out the economics of how to support dragons cities with raw meat. The results are funny, interesting, and unlike pretty much anything else in the genre.
