Fans of The Crown can look forward to more carefully mannered recreations of British history, as Netflix has announced that the series is going to run for six seasons, despite creator Peter Morgan originally thinking it would only go for five, per Deadline.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” Morgan said, no doubt in a crisp British accent. “To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

The final arc of the show will cover the lives of the British monarchy in the early 2000s, meaning it’ll cover the death of Princess Diana and beyond. But we won’t get to more recent events, like Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry electing to step back from their public roles, get jobs, and live as close to normally as possible when you’re both very rich and famous. Although I would watch that: Markle’s an actor, she could play herself.

At the moment, we’re between seasons three and four, with Olivia Colman having just stepped into the role of Queen Elizabeth II, played in the first two seasons by Claire Foy. Colman will continue on as the Queen in season 4, but will be replaced with Imelda Staunton for season 5, and now, 6.

The Crown keeps raising the bar with each new season,” said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix. “We can’t wait for audiences to see the upcoming fourth season, and we’re proud to support Peter’s vision and the phenomenal cast and crew for a sixth and final season.”

The Crown season 4 was filmed before quarantine set in and will debut later this year.
